MY JOURNEY:

Welcome to Recipes to Nourish! My name is Emily and I am a lover of Real Food and Holistic Health. I am passionate about cooking, love to share recipes, learn about natural remedies, share knowledge and learn from others. I have been on a crazy food journey, still evolving, still learning. I am an ex-vegan and vegetarian of over 17 years turned omnivore. I like my food fresh, nutrient-dense, whole, unprocessed, traditional and free of pesticides. I am a huge supporter of local farmers, farmers markets, organic produce or "organic" practices, and animals that are raised sustainably, humanely and fed a species appropriate diet (grass-fed/pastured).

I have been inspired by the work of Weston A. Price, the research of Sally Fallon Morell, Alice Waters for her passion and teaching us about the history of food and Jaime Oliver for encouraging growing your own food, getting in the kitchen to cook and for starting "Jaime Oliver's Food Revolution". My other food heroes are my favorite food bloggers, favorite local farmers, my friends who helped start me on my family's journey, and my sweet, dear grandma from Nashville, TN for showing me how to put love into food.

My little love gardening with me.

I am a proud water-homebirth mommy who is determined to provide the best things for my daughter, whether it is nutrition, full-term breastfeeding, eco-friendly toys and clothing, or just simply a loving family environment. I am a holistic-minded, "green" living, environmentally conscious, believer of sustainable products and agriculture. I believe in the healing power of nature and I honor the earth. I am a firm believer of herbal remedies and nutrition when it comes to health and healing. I am also very passionate about natural birthing, homebirth, extended breastfeeding, child-led weaning, bed-sharing and co-sleeping, cloth diapering, baby wearing, "attachment" parenting, gentle/peaceful parenting, non-vaxing, Waldorf education, unschooling, just to name a few ... call me crunchy, granola, hippie, earth mama - I take it all as a compliment.

Having my daughter changed my life in many ways. Not only did she bring so much joy and love, but she also made me more aware. She helped me open my eyes to everything - to question conventional wisdom, change the way we eat, stop using toxic products in our home and garden, switch from OB/Gyn care to my beloved midwives, and overall just to educate myself, KNOWLEDGE IS POWER. Since my daughter's birth, I have become more passionate about nutrition and what really is nourishing for our bodies. After my sweet girl was born, I went through some huge health issues, not knowing they were there all along, but only made more visible after her birth. It turns out that my gut was a wreck and probably has been my whole life. My vegetarian and vegan years of grain-heavy, soy dependent, nut-heavy, packaged products took a toll on my body. These health issues (and my daughter's health issues) encouraged me to change my diet and that's where our food journey started ... and we're still on it!

I believe that there is no one "perfect" or "best" diet for everyone. Some people thrive as vegans, some thrive as vegetarians and some thrive eating traditional foods. I think that we can all benefit from eating REAL food - fresh, whole, nutrient-dense, unprocessed food. I also feel that it is important for us all to know where our food comes from, who grew it and how it was grown.

I'm still on my food journey, and I will always focus on Real Food.

Nourish the mind, body and soul and enjoy Recipes to Nourish!

Love and light.
